Julian Assange is the Australian born founder of Wikileaks. As a journalist, he exposed many serious abuses by those in power worldwide. One of the most the most significant releases was a video showing a US helicopter killing Iraqi civilians. Those in power do not like their abuses being brought to light through the reporting of a non-complicit journalist exercising his freedom of speech. As such, the US and Britain concocted multiple charges against him, forcing him into exile for many years, only to be released by signing a plea agreement in 2024. Julian Assange's willingness to stand firm in the face of evil trying to silence him makes him a hero that we wanted to recognize in our "silenced" collection.
